Mary's Playhouse

In the garden area behind the Schulze family home at 303 South O’Connor stands Mary’s Playhouse.  Early Irving businessman C.P. Schulze built the playhouse from a converted chicken coop in the 1920’s for their young daughter Mary Schulze.  As she grew up, Mary used the building as a quiet place for reading, writing and meditation. Vignettes and scenes highlight aspects of her life and interests.  The playhouse contains some original toys used by Mary and her older brother Charles along with other collectables.   View the recording  www.ictn.tv/news/12082015-709 as the dedication of the reconstruction of Mary’s Playhouse took place.

The Schulze family home, now known as the Irving Heritage House, was built in 1912.  It was given to the city as a “historic tour home” by the Schulze children Charles and Catherine Schulze and Sister Mary Schulze in 1975.  The house became a Recorded Texas Historical Landmark in 1986.  Among the many antiques in the Heritage House are a Rosewood square piano (c. 1860), a mezzotint engraving from the American Art Union Lottery System, Flow Blue plates, and Limoges and Bavarian porcelains.  The current exhibit features wedding gowns from various decades.

The Irving Heritage and Mary’s Playhouse are located at 303 South O’Connor and are open for free public tours on the first Sunday of the month, March through and including December, from 3pm-5pm.  The tour on Sunday, August 7, will offer docent led tours at 3pm and 4pm.   Group tours may be requested for alternate dates by calling 972-252-3838.  Visit www.irvingheritage.com for more information.

Final Trivia Teams

Irving Trivia of Celebrating Irving:  The City and The Man is finished for another year.  It was a hard battle but the Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau team went home with the trophy and bragging rights once again.  They first had to win over the Entertainment Series of Irving team and that was not so easy.  It took the regular questions plus 27 tie breakers to qualify to move on to the next round on April 30 at the Valley Ranch Library.  Last year’s winning team from the La Cima Heritage Committee first had to also square off against the Irving Senior Arts Program team before coming up against the ICVB group for the final round.  Finally the moment was there for these two strong teams.  Mother Anne Pfaff against daughter Diana Pfaff provided no favoritism in this competition.  Members of the winning ICVB team included Maura Gast, Diana Pfaff, Joe Philipp, and David Cole, replacing team member Robert Martinez from the preliminary rounds.

It was all in good fun in this competition which throws out all rules except one……..no cheating.  Teams swapped players to fill in vacant slots, everyone cheered when the answers were correct, and all celebrated afterwards with a Texas sized birthday cake in honor of Washington Irving 233th birthday.   The activities were sponsored by the Irving Heritage Society, Irving Public Library, Irving Independent School District, Irving Black Arts Council, Irving Art Association, City of Irving and the National Scouting Museum. This program was made possible in part with a grant from Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, a grant from the Irving Schools Foundation, was funded in part by the City of Irving through the Irving Arts Board and a generous community gift honoring Betty Jean Ramsey Huffman.
