Keep Irving Beautiful (KIB) hosted a volunteer opportunity during the Religious Conference Management Association (RCMA) Feb. 4 at the Irving Convention Center, 500 W. Las Colinas Blvd.

During the RCMA Emerge 2020 conference, KIB partnered with the Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau to assist volunteers in making no-sew blankets for Irving organizations. The 24 member volunteer group worked a total of 60 hours and made 16 blankets.

After the blankets were finished, KIB delivered the blankets to Brighter Tomorrows, Irving Cares, Irving Independent School District’s Teenage Pregnant and Parenting Services Program, and the Texas Center for Proton Therapy. The material for the blankets was provided by ICVB.

“Keep Irving Beautiful is proud to have been chosen to participate at this event,” said KIB Board Member and Faith Groups Co-Chair Rachel Moon. “We are grateful to the volunteer group who worked with KIB. They really made a positive impact to the community during their time here.”

(IRVING, TEXAS)— Keep Irving Beautiful (KIB) staff discussed recycling and public cleaning Jan. 24 at the Heritage Senior Center, 200 S. Jefferson St.

KIB staff gave guests recycling gifts to use at home that included reusable shopping bags, blue recycling bags, recycled books, jar grippers made from recycled tires and a 2020 “Don‘t Mess with Texas” calendar.

Afterwards, guests posed for pictures at a pop-up photo booth.

“KIB staff enjoys coming to the Heritage Senior Center to talk about ways they can help improve the environment through recycling and other activities,” said KIB board member Karen Harmon.

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday was designated as a national day of service in 1994, inspiring people to make a difference in the community. That was the case with employee volunteers from Shake Shack, one of the new additions to Irving’s restaurant landscape, which partnered with Keep Irving Beautiful (KIB) for a beautification project Jan. 20.

The group donated its time at the Senter East Building by painting the foyer area. The City of Irving Parks and Recreation Department provided supplies and technical guidance. This marked the third year KIB volunteers have participated in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day service project. The two previous projects were held at Senter Park Recreation Center.

“It’s always great opportunity for Keep Irving Beautiful to join forces with the city’s businesses community,” said KIB board member Kelly Horn. “KIB looks forward to collaborating with Shake Shack again in the future. The organization also appreciates the Parks and Recreation Department for its help with projects such as this and in the many others that volunteers have completed across Irving. These projects leave a noticeable and lasting imprint, and really make a difference.”

Keep Irving Beautiful (KIB) and North Lake College volunteers completed a beautification project Jan. 10 at the Senter East Building, 228 Chamberlain St.

Six volunteers painted the building that will used for a variety of recreational activities throughout the year. The City of Irving’s Parks and Recreation Department provided the necessary supplies and guidance for the project.

“This event shows students the importance of helping the community,” said KIB board member Candace Eldridge. “Our volunteer partnerships with North Lake College are always a great experience.”

The project was completed with a total of 22 service hours. The volunteer group consisted of two current students, one former student who now studies at Texas Women’s University and longtime KIB volunteer Sammy Romero.

Those who were walking dogs, riding bicycles or hiking at Sam Houston Trail on Dec. 14 likely noticed peculiar activity at the meadow: an enthusiastic group of volunteers, who were planting trees under the guidance of the City of Irving Parks and Recreation Department. Members of the Calvary Church “Loving Our City” team joined Keep Irving Beautiful (KIB) to plant twelve trees, a mix of bald cypress, bur oak and cedar elm, in an area known as the meadow.

The six volunteers gave 18 hours of service and worked side by side with Parks and Recreation staff, who taught them proper planting techniques throughout the process. The volunteers learned about root preparation and ideal planting depth, as well as staking techniques and the use of mulch.

The purchase of the trees was made possible by a generous donation to KIB by Northrop Grumman through their Corporate Citizenship Program.

“Keep Irving Beautiful works with all areas of the community, and this tree planting demonstrates that,” said KIB Board Vice President Chuck Kirk. “This project was funded by Northrop Grumman, which has an office in Irving, while a Calvary Church faith group planted the trees. As always, the Parks Department did an outstanding job in guiding and educating volunteers through all steps of the planting.”

Keep Irving Beautiful (KIB) staff and a group of senior citizens gathered at the Irving Family YMCA on Nov. 21 for the annual America Recycles Day celebratory breakfast.

America Recycles Day (ARD) is a nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting recycling in the United States. It is a KIB program, and as the local Keep America Beautiful affiliate, KIB is one of hundreds of similar organizations across the country that holds events to celebrate ARD.

KIB supplied blue recycling bags, which the seniors filed with recyclable materials and delivered to the YMCA during the first two weeks of November. The event officially ended on Nov. 15. Solid Waste Services provided a roll-off container at the YMCA and weighed the materials collected.

The seniors collected a total of 460 pounds of recyclables and were honored for their efforts with the breakfast provided by KIB. One lucky senior won the prize drawing—a Keep Texas Beautiful Christmas ornament.

“This is another example of a partnership that is so important to Keep Irving Beautiful,” said KIB board member Margie Stipes. “Working together on a local level with the YMCA seniors and Solid Waste Services, and having the support of the national organization made this event a success.  KIB appreciates the YMCA and the seniors who participate in this event each year.”

KIB Board Member Candace Eldridge with event attendee at the KIB table

Keep Irving Beautiful (KIB) continued a longstanding tradition of attending the Unite for Troops Veterans Day event on Nov. 9. The annual event is hosted by Porter’s Army and Navy. KIB’s role at the event was both as an exhibitor and as the provider of green event supplies, including recycling stations placed throughout the grounds. Visitors to the KIB table had the opportunity to spin a wheel and answer questions in six different categories related to the environment. Prizes included recycled books donated by the Friends of the Irving Public Library.  KIB also supported the three R’s – reduce, reuse, recycle— by distributing reusable items, such as shopping bags and drinking pouches. Additionally, KIB offered attendees many varieties of seed packets to grow their own flowers, vegetables and herbs.

“Unite for Troops is a community event that KIB is always proud and honored to be a part of,” said KIB board member Candace Eldridge. “It’s a family-friendly atmosphere and everyone attends to honor veterans, support active military, and have a fun and educational experience.”

Unite for Troops activities are focused on packing boxes to send to United Service Organizations in Afghanistan. Volunteers contribute a wide variety of items, including snacks, toiletries and puzzle books. The items are intended to help bring the comforts of home to the deployed troops.

The City of Irving recorded a 34 percent decrease in the amount of litter across the city, according to Keep Irving Beautiful’s (KIB) 2019 Litter Index Survey.

This year, the overall average score was 1.26 compared to the previous year’s score of 1.90. The survey accessed nine areas throughout Irving, which included residential and commercial areas. The survey was conducted on Oct. 18.

“The Litter Index Survey helps identify areas that might need some cleanup attention, but it also shows how most of the Irving neighborhoods are well maintained,” said KIB board member Margie Stripes.

The Litter Index is one of the requirements for KIB to maintain its President’s Circle level. KIB attributes the decrease in litter to its efforts in educating and engaging with the Irving community, as well as through programs, such as Adopt-a-Spot and green events.

During the survey, KIB volunteers independently rank the areas with numbers one to four based on the amount of visible litter. A one rank indicates the least amount of visible litter and a four describes the area as “extremely littered.”

At the end of the survey, all the scores are compiled and averaged. Afterwards, the survey’s percentage is determined by comparing the average number to the baseline score.

KIB conducts the Litter Index Survey every year in October. The organization started tracking litter in Irving back in 2001.

The buildings at the Irving Soccer Complex have a vibrant, new look thanks to Vizient employee volunteers and Keep Irving Beautiful (KIB).

On Oct. 22, Vizient’s group of volunteers tackled a beautification project by painting the concession and facility buildings yellow, red and blue at the soccer complex. The project was part of the Irving-based company’s annual “Community Day.”

A total of 21 volunteers completed 84 service hours painting the buildings at the Irving Soccer Complex. The City of Irving Parks and Recreation Department provided supplies and technical guidance for the project. Vizient project team leaders were James Hull and Amanda List.

“Vizient has been a great supporter and sponsor of KIB for many years,” said KIB board member Kelly Horn. “We greatly appreciate the dedication this company has given to the Irving community.”

“Fluor Cares” was the motto for Fluor employees and family members who volunteered with Keep Irving Beautiful (KIB) for a cleanup at Bird’s Fort Trail Park on Oct. 19.

Eighteen volunteers collected 125 pounds of trash and 45 pounds of recyclable materials in the park. Bird’s Fort Trail Park is part of Irving’s Campion Trail System.

The company’s employee volunteer program began in 1976 and was later renamed to “Fluor Cares” in 2010. Last year, Fluor employees volunteered more than 52,000 hours through this program.

“Fluor Corporation is a great example of a company giving back to the community where they do business,” said KIB Board Member Chuck Kirk. “KIB is fortunate to have such an active and involved corporate presence here in Irving that places a high value on community service.”

Fluor Corporation is a global engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance company headquartered in Irving.
