[Irving, Texas] – Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB) announced Dr. Roy Vu, professor of history at North Lake College, as the winner of the 2018 Sadie Ray Graff Educator Award on May 11. Educator is one of four categories in the Keep Texas Beautiful Youth & Educator Awards and honors a teacher who provides instruction and encouragement of youth involvement while promoting the KTB mission. Each year, Keep Texas Beautiful recognizes the efforts of young people, educators and educational institutions that promote beautification, waste reduction and litter prevention through environmental education and community activism.
Dr Vu was cited for his outstanding leadership, innovation, and impact he has had not just at North Lake, but in the Irving community and beyond. He is a perennial volunteer for the local KTB affiliate, Keep Irving Beautiful, and regularly volunteers at cleanup events alongside his students. He was instrumental in North Lake’s “Green Diploma” program, now known as SAGE Scholars, which incorporates environmentally sound principles, as well as Service Learning hours, into the curriculum. He has co-authored a book on sustainability, and is currently championing efforts for the North Lake South Campus to become a “Tree Campus USA,” a distinction already achieved at the Central Campus.
Keep Irving Beautiful Board President Jim Scrivner congratulated Dr. Vu on the honor by saying, “Roy is very deserving of this award for all he does to promote the KTB mission, in and out of the classroom. He has a great vision for what his students can become, and works tirelessly to help them achieve their goals. He is also great advocate for KIB and supports what our organization stands for. We were honored to nominate him for this prestigious award, and very pleased that he was chosen as the winner.
