One of the many North Lake students who stopped by KIB's table at the Service Learning Fair

Keep Irving Beautiful attended the two-day Service Learning Fair at North Lake College’s Central Campus on February 11 and 12.  Staff member Julie Schmitt was joined by KIB Board member and North Lake Professor Dr. Yolanda Romero, and they spoke with students about the various programs and volunteer opportunities that are available with KIB. Students who are enrolled in Service Learning choose from several non-profit agencies to complete their hours, usually 15 to 20 per class. The program combines academic instruction with active community service, students develop valuable skills and experience in the process.  Over the past six years in which KIB has partnered with North Lake in this program, hundreds of students have made a positive impact by participating in activities like cleanups, tree plantings, paint projects and participating in environmental skits at local area schools.

Dr. Romero, who is also the advisor for the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, remarked on the benefits of the partnership between KIB and North Lake College.  “Participation in Service Learning is one of several ways that KIB partners with North Lake, and it has been very rewarding to see those partnerships grow over the years.  KIB already had a relationship with Phi Theta Kappa through a Keep America Beautiful-sponsored national program, so when we joined the Service Learning program it was a smooth transition.   At KIB, we know we couldn’t accomplish as much as we do without the efforts of the students and staff of North Lake College.”

Keep Irving Beautiful is an award-winning, grassroots, non-profit leadership organization dedicated to educating community members about litter abatement, recycling and beautification in order to help preserve the health and promote the social and economic prosperity of our city.  For information on how you can become involved in volunteering with KIB, please go to www.keepirvingbeautiful.org, or call the KIB office at 972-721-2175.
