Irving Resident Invited to Attend Award-Winning PhD Project Conference

Nami Ahmed Invited to Attend Award-Winning PhD Project Conference

Program, now in its 24th year, supports diversity in corporate America

November, 2018—The PhD Project, an award-winning program to create diversity in management, founded by the KPMG Foundation, the lead funder of the program announces that Shabnam “Nami” Ahmed, a resident of Irving, Texas, has been invited to attend the annual PhD Project Conference, being held at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare from November 14-16, 2018. Nami is currently pursuing her Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and does marketing consulting for small businesses.

“I’m very excited and honored to have been selected to attend this remarkable conference. This organization represents and aligns with many of my personal and career goals. I was fortunate enough to have my tribe, Cheyenne River Sioux and the American Indian Graduate Center award me with enough scholarships to cover my master’s degree tuition. Now, with the PhD Project’s efforts, I am truthfully humbled and appreciative of these organizations pushing and encouraging such diversity within corporate America and academia.” – Nami Ahmed

The PhD Project, a 501(c) (3) organization that the KPMG Foundation founded in 1994, recruits minority professionals from business into doctoral programs in all business disciplines. Mainly through the efforts of The PhD Project, there has been an increase in the number of minority business professors from 294 to 1470. Further, over 270 minorities are currently enrolled in doctoral programs, and will take a place at the front of the classroom over the next few years. The Project attacks the root cause of minority under-representation in corporate jobs: historically, very few minority college students study business as an entrée to a corporate career.  Diversifying the faculty attracts more minorities to study business and better prepares all students to function in a diverse workforce.

Qualified candidates are invited to this annual conference where they hear from deans, professors and current minority doctoral students about the benefits of pursuing a business Ph.D.  Candidates are exposed to more than 100 doctoral-granting universities that are represented during a university exhibit fair at the conference. Networking with the university reps, deans, professors and current doctoral students provides candidates with the tools and resources they need to be better prepared for the application/admission process to doctoral programs.

Nami Ahmed was born and raised in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and purchased her first home in Irving in 2016. She is half Pakistani and half Native American who is also a first-generation college graduate earning her undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2011. Since then, she worked her way up the corporate ladder from a graphic designer to a marketing director in little under eight years.

The PhD Project has received ongoing support from its sponsoring companies, participating universities and organizations. The sponsors, who are founding organizations in addition to the KPMG Foundation, are the Graduate Management Admission Council and AACSB International. Other leading corporations, foundations and associations funding The Project  include: AICPA Foundation, DiversityInc, Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP, American Marketing Association, Rockwell Collins, John Deere FoundationCalifornia State University SystemLincoln Financial Group, Academy of Management, American Accounting Association, City University of New York System, Aerotek, NASBA, Thrivent Financial, American Express Foundation, Fidelity Investments, Bentley University, LinkedIn,  Annette L.
