Clifton Early Childhood School Enjoys Visit From Kirby and Friends

Visiting Clifton Early Childhood School during Earth Week has become a tradition for Keep Irving Beautiful (KIB) since KIB volunteers first performed their environmental skit in 2009. KIB returned on April 25 to present the skit, which includes KIB mascot Kirby the Toucan, the City of Irving’s recycling mascot, Buddy Blue Bag and the Litterbug (who by the end of the skit is renamed the “Recycle Bug”). The children enjoy learning about the importance of recycling and not littering from these comical characters.

The skit was part of the Earth Week festivities, which for the past few years have been coordinated by bilingual teacher Veronica Rubio. One of the highlights of the week was the recycled art contest, which has had increased participation each year. Visitors to the school could not help but notice the tables of clever projects lining the hallway as they entered.

“We always enjoy visiting Clifton because the staff and students are so receptive,” said       KIB’s Julie Schmitt. “Reaching children at an early age to teach them environmental stewardship is so important. What I find especially rewarding is that when we go to elementary schools for career days, many of the students remember us and the lessons they learned at Clifton.”
