Our gift to you, for giving to those in need: the New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving’s free concert December 13, when you bring gifts for Irving Cares

The New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving presents a free concert of music for strings and brass, 3:30 p.m. Sunday, December 13 at the Irving Arts Center. To attend, make reservations at the IAC box office (972-252-ARTS), and bring nonperishable food items for Irving Cares to Carpenter Hall. Only 160 people will be able to attend this special concert.

The concert will be taped and rebroadcasted December 20 on our website at  www.npoirving.com. There are some nine sites in Irving where concert viewers can leave food items for the busy food pantry. Due to Covid-19-related social-distancing requirements, NPOI has tailored its programming for the 2020-2021 season to emphasize works for smaller orchestra, and chamber ensembles.

For this free concert, Dr. Sergio Espinosa, NPOI’s conductor and musical director, has chosen these pieces of music for string orchestra: I Cristantemi (the Chrysanthemums) by Giacomo Puccini (composer of La Boheme and other well-known operas), and the Holberg Suite, Opus 40, by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. The NPOI brass section will perform Symphony in Brass by contemporary American composer, Eric Ewazen.

Future NPOI concerts have been scheduled at the Irving Arts Center’s Carpenter Hall for February 14, March 28, and May 16, 2021. Tickets will range from $10 to $20, and a “flex-pass” discount program will apply.

Dr. Espinosa is an associate professor at the University of Texas at Arlington. A specialist in string music education, he has given workshops and presentations throughout the United States, Canada, China and Australia. He also serves as Senior Music Examiner for the International Baccalaureate organization in Wales, United Kingdom.

The New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving is a community orchestra, consisting of trained musicians who choose to continue to play their instruments while they serve in other professions: teaching, accounting, computer science, film-making and others. NPOI has performed for audiences in Irving, Euless, Dallas and throughout the Metroplex.
