With the summer heat setting in, there is nothing like a cold, refreshing beverage to cool you down.

Because sometimes food just can’t satisfy like a delicious thirst-quencher, we compiled a list of some of our favorite spots to grab a drink in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. 

Highland Park Old Fashioned Soda Fountain

This charming space recently celebrated 100 years in Dallas. The Highland Park Pharmacy opened in 1912 and has been serving up sandwiches, a respectable offering of breakfast entrees and, of course, the famous soda fountain. We all know there’s nothing better than ice cream on a hot summer day, but here, you get to slurp it down in the form of a milkshake (in a frosty glass!) The shop has sundaes, too, but the ice cream sodas, floats and malts are what we go for at the HP Soda Fountain.

Cork Wine Bar

Obviously this one isn’t family friendly, but it’s a solid date night destination. Have dinner in the West Village before stopping by or have a plate of Molto Formaggio cheese and Chocolate Secrets chocolate with your wine samplings. One thing I really like about Cork is the opportunity to sample wines. When I went, I loaded my Cork card with $10 because I wanted to try a bit of everything. From fruity and light to nutty, my money bought me five one-ounce tastings. This is an ideal place to unwind, learn about wine and spend time with friends or a date.

Mudsmith Coffee

The spot on Lower Greenville is relatively new (Jan. 2013) but has already made a name for itself in this trendy area of Dallas. Right down the street from the Granada Theater and decorated with deer heads and dark wood, the hipster-rustic Mudsmith is a great summer spot for thirsty people. They’ve got a sweet patio where I like to suck down iced mochas. They’ve also got a decent amount of wine and beer on tap for those in the mood for a stronger beverage, and they just started juicing. The only setback at Mudsmith is their prices—iced espresso-based drinks are going to run you at least $5 for a small.

Coach Slim’s New Orleans Style Sno-Balls

Okay, so a snow cone isn’t technically a drink, but this place is just too cute and summery to resist. And it’s a safe space for the kids, too. Coach Slim offers a multitude of flavors to choose from (dill pickle, piña colada, blackberry w/ cream, etc.). This particular rendition of snow cone comes from New Orleans, owner Dwayne (Slim) Crenshaw says, because Texas ice is too crunchy. The sno-balls are so soft you can just about sip it with a straw. Located on Preston Road in Frisco, Coach Slim’s is a popular treat for Collin County dwellers.

Fruitealicious Bubble Tea & Smoothies

With locations in Carrollton and Frisco, Fruitealicious’ menu boasts various refreshing bubble teas and fruit chillers in flavors that will blow your mind. Mango passion fruit, peach and watermelon slushes and smoothies just scream summer. Pack up the family, take in the ambiance (including free wi-fi) and enjoy a sweet treat.

Mi Cocina

This restaurant offering Mexican fare has some fantastic drink offerings. With locations across the metroplex, chances are you can find one near you. Our personal favorite is a Mi Cocina original—the Mambo Taxi—a frozen margarita mixed with their homemade Sangria. Several locations have fabulous outdoor patios, topping off the experience of enjoying yummy adult drinks.

Raising Cane’s

Yes, it’s a chain, but their sweet tea and lemonade is to die for. Nothing says summer like a big glass of these two beverages, and Raising Cane’s’ ice is crushed, adding to the appeal. Wash down some chicken fingers and that famous Cane’s sauce with tea or lemonade (or a combination of the two!) at an outdoor picnic. A bona fide summer treat!
