Irving Students to Play in Downtown Dallas Rhythms of Dance Concert

The New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving presents “The Rhythms of Dance” as the featured concert on Sunday, May 28 in the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s SOLUNA international music and arts festival. The concert is a repeat of NPOI's Latino Connections event last Sunday at the Irving Arts Center. Irving ISD orchestra students will join the orchestra for part of this concert, as they did on Sunday.

The 3:00 p.m. concert will take place at the Dallas City Performance Hall in the Dallas Arts District—climaxing a day of free SOLUNA activities and small group music taking place in Klyde Warren Park next to the Arts District.

Dr. Sergio Espinosa, NPOI’s conductor and musical director, has programmed these dance-oriented pieces from the world of  Latin symphonic music: “Danzón No. 2” by Arturo Marquez, “Suite Estancias” by Alberto Ginastera,” “Sinfonietta” by Pablo Moncayo, “Estampas Nocturnas” by Manuel M. Ponce, “Sensemayá” by Silvestre Revueltas and the traditional song, “El Sinaloense.” Hockaday School and Irving ISD orchestra students will join NPOI for part of the concert.

Mariachi Rosas Divinas, led by NPOI principal second violinist Karen Gerardo, will play outside of the Dallas City Performance Hall in advance of the concert. Ms. Gerardo is a graduate of the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Arts across the street. The group is comprised of all women musicians.

Dr. Espinosa is an associate professor at the University of Texas at Arlington. A specialist in string music education, he has given workshops and presentations throughout the United States, Canada, China and Australia. He also serves as Senior Music Examiner for the International Baccalaureate organization in Wales, United Kingdom.

The New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving is a community orchestra, consisting of trained musicians who choose to continue to play their instruments while they serve in other professions: teaching, accounting, computer science, film-making and others. NPOI has performed for audiences in Irving, Euless, Dallas and throughout the Metroplex.

For tickets ($19), go to www.myDSO.com, or stop at the Dallas City Performance hall box office counter, open from 1:30 p.m. on May 28. Parking is available nearby in open-air lots from $6, or use Arts District covered parking.
